The day’s proceedings at the ICJ daily begin with a one-hour news analysis session. The students deal with a variety of news items carried by different newspapers besides debating on how daily succeeds or fails in highlighting them.

For the purpose, the students are classified into five groups of students each with each group holding the session on a daily turn. In addition to analyzing how newspapers have dealt with the news stories  ranging from regional, national to international and politics, economics and sports, the students also do a detailed introspection on how the dailies compete with each other in doing so.

The news analysis sessions are held from 9.30 AM to 10.30 AM. The students go through all the newspapers, including national dailies besides listening to Radio and TV bulletins so that they remain completely prepared for the show.

Since the exercise demands collection of series of inputs, the students make it a point to be at the ICJ at least an hour in advance so that they can enrich themselves with necessary information from all available sources to make the session live and interesting.

Infact, the news analysis session is regarded not only to be very crucial but at the same time also inevitable to the journalist students as the session really helps them to have a feel of how newspapers deal with different subjects to bring the entire worldwide happenings within the available space of say 12 or 16 pages.

Interestingly, the session automatically makes every student a compulsory reader of several newspapers, which is very essential to remain effective in this profession.

Also, as the students get opportunities to read the news in front of their colleagues, they get the first round of training in news reading during the process.

Needless to say, news analysis session undoubtedly serves as the primary training base from where the students move on to their regular classes with a fresh frame of mind daily.
